The Process of the Professional Internship (If the internship is completed during the 8th semester)
- During the course enrolment in December, you must choose one of the internship types offered in the study programme (teaching, translation, intercultural communication, etc.). See the descriptions of the types of internships below, in the section Internship Tasks and Requirements, if you need more information, please contact the head of your Study Programme Committee. You can select only those internships that have a supervisor assigned in the enrolment on the IS VU.
- From February 4th until March 14th, you must participate in seminars (and/or lectures, consultations) at the Faculty. These seminars are required for you to prepare for the Internship at your chosen organization.
- Until March 1st you must find an internship vacancy and get it approved by your supervisor at the university.
- By March 14th, you must have a signed tripartite practical training agreement. The agreement is arranged by the Department of Studies.
Steps for signing the agreement
The agreement can be signed in 2 ways (you will have to select one in the Information for the Practical Training Agreement form):
1. Fill in the INFORMATION FOR THE PRACTICAL TRAINING AGREEMENT and send it to the Department of Studies via e-mail . The agreement/information on signing it will be sent to your university e-mail.
- Physically (on paper), in 3 copies. You can pick up your printed agreement copies from the Department of Studies. The agreement is signed in this order: 1) by the student 2) by the internship host organization 3) by Vilnius University, represented by the Dean of the Faculty of Philology. This means that after getting the signature from your host organization, you must return all 3 agreement copies to the faculty to get the final signature.
- By exchanging signed and scanned copies of the agreement in PDF. The agreement is signed in this order: 1) by the student 2) by the internship host organization 3) by Vilnius University, represented by the Dean of the Faculty of Philology. After getting the agreement signed by the host organization, please send the scanned copy to
2. When all three parties sign the agreement, you must return one copy of it to your internship host organization.
- From March 14th until April 25th, the practical training in the host organization of the internship takes place. You can consult your supervisor at the university (if needed), and you must prepare the documents needed to complete the internship: the report, description of tasks, feedback about the student from the internship supervisor at the host organization and/or any other materials required by your internship supervisor at the university.
- Until April 30th you must report about your internship by presenting the required materials to your supervisor at the university. If you fail to do this on time, you will not get the credits allocated for your internship and therefore will not be allowed to defend your BA thesis and graduate.
Completing the Professional Internship in advance
You may carry out the professional internship at the host organization in advance, but not before completing your 3rd year of studies (6th semester).
If you want to do the internship in advance, you must:
- Write your motivation for doing the internship in advance to the internship supervisor at the University, and arrange internship tasks, requirements, and deadlines. You can contact your Study Programme Committee to find out who is the supervisor for the type of internship that you are interested in.You must get approval to do the internship in advance from both the supervisor and the head of your Study Programme Committee.
- Send the approvals along with the INFORMATION FOR THE PRACTICAL TRAINING AGREEMENT form to the Department of Studies, . For further information, see “Steps for signing the agreement” above.
If you complete the internship at the host organization in advance, you are still required to attend the seminars (and/or lectures, consultations) in the 8th semester (during February and March). The seminars are part of the evaluation of your professional internship.
Internship Tasks and Requirements
The exact requirements for your internship will be presented by the supervisor at the university, during the internship seminars.
A total of 400 hours are allocated to professional internship.
The distribution of hours of the internship in all study programmes (except English and Other Foreign Language) is as follows:
- 48 hours – internship seminars at the faculty
- 120 hours – internship at the host organization
- 32 hours – consultations (with your supervisor at the university)
- 200 hours – individual work by the student
The distribution of hours of the internship in English and Other Foreign Language:
- 240 hours – internship at the host organization
- 24 hours – consultations (with your supervisor at the university)
- 136 hours – individual work by the student
Teaching internship
The aim of the internship is to help the students consolidate and demonstrate the generic and subject-specific competencies gained during their studies:
- The basis of didactics for the studied language - the ability to observe, analyse, plan, and implement the lessons of the language (and literature) being studied according to the communicative direction of teaching, choosing the appropriate (depending on the teaching goals, the specifics of the group, etc.) methods and teaching materials;
- Understanding of the culture of the country of the studied language and intercultural competence;
- The communicative competence of the user of the studied language - the ability to communicate in writing and orally in the studied language in various communicative situations;
- Analytical and critical thinking, the ability to work independently and in a team, the ability to communicate and cooperate, and the ability to (self) evaluate to achieve quality.
When reporting for the internship, the student must present:
- A thorough report of the internship, including:
- *Information about the host organization (educational institution)
- *An individual teaching internship program;
- *Analysis of observed lessons; taught lesson plans and analysis;
- *Information about other activities in the educational institution;
- *Other material specified in the description of the internship (e.g. teaching and methodical materials);
- *Self-evaluation and comments on the internship.
- Feedback about the intern from the supervisor at the host organization (with evaluation).
Intercultural Communication internship
The aim of the internship is to help the students consolidate and demonstrate the generic and subject-specific competencies gained during their studies:
- The communicative competence of the user of the studied language - the ability to communicate in writing and orally in the studied language in various communicative situations;
- Understanding of the culture of the country of the studied language and intercultural competence;
- Analytical and critical thinking, the ability to work independently and in a team, the ability to communicate and cooperate, the ability to (self) evaluate to achieve quality.
When reporting for the internship, the student will present:
- A thorough report of the internship, including:
- *Information about the host organization
- *A diary of the internship;
- *Self-evaluation and comments on the internship;
- *If fitting – created (or co-created) content during the internship.
- Feedback about the intern from the supervisor at the host organization (with evaluation).
Translation internship
The aim of the internship is to help the students consolidate and demonstrate the generic and subject-specific competencies gained during their studies:
- The communicative and intercultural competence of the user of the studied language - the ability to mediate in written (and oral) translation from the studied language, using translation programs, electronic resources and other tools or technologies;
- Analysis of the studied language system at various levels;
- Analytical and critical thinking, the ability to work independently and in a team, the ability to communicate and cooperate, and the ability to (self) evaluate to achieve quality.
When reporting for the internship, the student will present:
- A thorough report of the internship, including:
- *Information about the host organization
- *A diary of the internship;
- *Self-evaluation and comments on the internship;
- *Completed translations and their originals (without confidential information).
- Feedback about the intern from the supervisor at the host organization (with evaluation).
