Many of our graduates work as translators/interpreters in various institutions and the European Union (Brussels, Luxembourg, Strasbourg) as well as Lithuanian government. A number of our students have held a position in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Almost half of the staff in the French Embassy in Lithuania were also students at out department.
People who got their education at our department also work as teachers in secondary schools and gymnasia or lecturers in higher education institutions. The majority of lecturers at the Department of French Philology are graduates of Vilnius University who chose to study French and later decided to join the Department and who devote to teaching a variety of disciplines (both theoretical and practical) related to French civilisation, culture, literature, history, geography, linguistics and, certainly, with the French language itself, i.e. its phonetics, grammar, syntax, lexical and stylistic peculiarities. The Department also has lecturers who are native French speakers and who teach conversational French.
You will be able to apply and also improve your knowledge of French during teaching or translation practice and also in our theatre that was established in 1998. In addition, by taking advantage of different programmes you will be able to travel abroad to study in other European higher institutions (for a year or half of a year) where you will also have a chance to improve the knowledge and skills of French and also investigate other disciplines in the field of philology.
Great support to our students is the ability for them to use a great amount of resources available in the French Culture Centre that is just a few steps away from the University. The sources are indeed valuable and they range from books to audio and records, internet, etc. Moreover, the French Cultural Centre also arranges a wide spectrum of events that deal with contemporary French art, literature, movies, etc. Therefore school graduates choosing our Department have all opportunities to become excellent specialists of French, if, of course, they do not forget that the only key to successful career is serious, diligent ant consistent work.
