BA Translation studies
BA in Translation aims at empowering BA students with solid basics in theory and practice of translation by encouraging them to develop interlingual competence, which includes comprehension skills of the source and target languages, understanding of the social nature and social aspects of a language; promotes a systemic approach to the source and target languages; reveals the importance of terms in translation, their operating principles in translation text. The programme aims at the development of students' critical and creative attitudes to translation tasks, to text writing, processing and marketing; it pursues the principle of providing quality translation producs and ability of self-evaluation in individual and team tasks.
The first foreign language used in Translation BA is English, while the second language rotates every year between French, Italian, German and Spanish. Other languages are offered as well, for instance, Norvegian, Russian, Latvian, Chinese, Lithuanian Sign Language.
MA Translation studies
The Translation Program is designed to meet the needs of European institutions and the language services market. Students develop skills in applying modern translation methods, utilizing the latest translation technologies, and cultivating competencies in professional translation and academic research.
When applying to the Department of Translation Studies, you can choose from:
- Master’s Program: A two-year program leading to a Master’s degree in Translation.
- Lifelong Learning Program: A 30-credit qualification enhancement program completed over 1.5 years, culminating in an Academic Certificate.
Since 2022, the Translation program has been offered as part of the joint study program under the “Arqus” Alliance. During the third semester, Vilnius University (VU) students have the opportunity to study at one of the partner universities: Universidad de Granada (Spain), Université Jean Monnet Saint-Etienne (France), or Università degli Studi di Padova (Italy). At the end of their studies, Master’s theses are defended before joint examination committees.
Graduates of the Translation program receive two Master’s degrees: one from Vilnius University and another from the partner university where they completed their third-semester studies, such as the University of Granada.
MA Interpreting studies
The Department of Translation Studies is officially recognized by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Interpretation (SCIC) as the only center in Lithuania that meets EU professional requirements for training conference interpreters. Professionals from the European Commission and European Parliament’s translation services provide pedagogical support for interpreter training, offer consultations, and participate in workshops, seminars, mock conferences, and examinations.
