Ringailė Trakymaitė. Adjectival marking of definiteness in Lithuanian, Russian and Swedish against a typological background The grammatical category of definiteness has been well-studied and documented. Yet, means of grammatically marking the category vary immensely. The primary concern of this dissertation is that of a noun phrase (NP) being definite or indefinite. The adjectival marking of definiteness is a typologically rare one, shared today only by the Baltic, Slavonic and Germanic (Scandinavian) languages. In these languages, definiteness of an NP is determined by either solely a special declension of adjectives or in combination with other definite markers elsewhere in the NP. Hence, this paper focuses on the typology of the adjectival marking of definiteness across three languages and language groups, in which this linguistic phenomenon persists.
