Anotacija. Despite the abundance of English textbooks developed for learners with common native languages like Spanish or Chinese, learner needs of representatives of smaller nations are underexplored. Drawing our data from perception and production tasks completed by Vilnius University students, we examine one of the phenomena Lithuanian learners of English (LLE) consistently find problematic, viz. /v/-/w/ distinction (the other two being aspiration and schwa). Given that Lithuanian consonantal inventory has no phonemic equivalent of /w/, treatment of the letter <v> varies from a labial fricative, labiodental to a bilabial approximant. The LLE production of /v/ as /w/ is regularly identified for remediation and necessitates further analysis.
In this lecture, we look into the roots of the issue, share the findings of our study and suggest possible remedial measures.
